Simple Question Serves as Boeing’s Inspiration for Seahawk Livery

The effort to paint a Boeing 747-8 Freighter in a Seahawks livery started with a question. “Wouldn’t it be cool if we could paint a 747 in a Seahawks livery with a big 12?” asked Brian Steinmetz, leader of the 747 Business Operations team. He asked the question out loud during a meeting on January 20, the Monday after the team’s NFC Championship win. Everyone agreed but went about the business of Boeing until later that night.

Scot Horton, leader of the Materials Management Organization for the 747 program, couldn’t let go of the idea. He called Steinmetz and encouraged him to explore what could be possible.

“The Seahawks and the 747 are both great icons of the Pacific Northwest,” Horton said. “It’s a natural and the opportunity was too good to pass up if we could find a way to make it work.”

It is unusual for Boeing to have a 747-8 it owns with no livery that is planned for flight test activities in Puget Sound; but it did this week. The paint resources at Boeing are typically booked non-stop; but there was an open window this week. Flight test schedules don’t usually have flexibility to accommodate three days in paint; but this schedule did. Every time Steinmetz asked a question he got an answer that supported his plan.

“There were a lot of opportunities for this not to happen and so many things had to fall in place. The creativity and enthusiasm of the team helped us minimize the cost and resources required. Our senior executives saw the value of supporting our home team and the pieces all fell into place,” Steinmetz said.

In fact, the enthusiasm that followed the Seahawks all season has been mirrored in the effort to turn the idea for a tribute to the Seahawks and their fans into a finished product in less than a week after receiving approval to proceed. From the team at Teague, the design firm that partners with Boeing on livery creation, to people who painted the airplane and all of the employees and fans in the community who will have the opportunity to see the airplane, the project has created a sense of community and common interest as it progressed.

“We’re all looking for a way to express our support for the team and our sense of community,” Steinmetz said. “As much as we want to, we can’t all go to New York and cheer from the stands; but we can cheer from here. And you know, I think if we are all in this together they’ll hear us all the way across the country. Here at Boeing, we’re in.”
